I think there's a big emerging problem in UK academia: the massive brain drain that's to come as numerous senior scholars are made redundant. We urgently need a system that keeps at least some of us in academia. I wonder if this is something that funding bodies are planning to address?

There are lots of opportunities for early career researchers but nothing that is paid, so far as I can see, for people further down the line. Obviously academic posts are more or less non-existent, because of the cuts. Without permanent posts we are ineligible for funding schemes.

1/2 We have mid and senior career fellowships (the calls will open later this year). The situation in HE is obviously desperate. We wish we could do more but our funding is limited by what we can raise (from Govt/other sources) which is also coming under pressure.

But these schemes are only open to those with jobs, aren't they, because they only offer teaching relief? Therefore anyone made redundant would be excluded from applying. I think it's crisis time: more important to keep people in academia than fund those who are lucky enough to have jobs.

(Mid-career scheme is for youngsters really, because the cut off date is, I think, 12 years post-PhD. But as I say, a person who has lost their job couldn't apply anyway.)

What's needed is an equivalent of the early career scheme but for people struggling later on. Something that actually pays living costs rather than covering a teaching buy-out. This seems more important than e.g. funding overseas visiting academics (nice to have but less essential).
