It's all diplomatically said, but this account of the heavy hand being placed on Krugman's columns & the limiting of his newsletter is damning of the Times. It's also entirely of a piece with what has happened to the Times & what it has become.

What I meant, Paul, was the sort of aggressive editing that Krugman resented. Tommy is the quintessence of NYT "moderation," and no one seemed to object to him getting paid to shill for MBS, either.

The explanation for what's wrong with the media is very simple - they are in the bag for the GOP. The media isn't being repeatedly played by the GOP - they know exactly what they are doing.

Must read article about the NYT betrayal of its once proud tradition of publishing news that adhered to the principles of the Fourth Estate, truth, and foundations of democracy.

The paper, like the principles they’ve betrayed, will succumb to the stranglehold of drumpf’s fascism and rue the day.

Excellent article. What I don't understand about this approach by the NYT (and WaPo too) is: who are they going after as readers? Do they think they'll convince low information voters to spring for NYT and WaPo subscriptions? Or are the owners/editors just bent on destroying newspapers of record?
