They safeguard the rights of citizens (and a free press) to scrutinize the Government. Defends expression of a plurality of opinions.
Opposition presents how Government is destroying each of the functions/agencies approved and funded by Congress.
The “middle” D wants to quietly negotiate to win over those who DAILY ingest coordinated lying. Has not worked in 8 years.

So, why are we expecting Democrats to act when they have no actual power in Congress, but not expecting Republicans to act when they absolutely are in power?
Or was there something concrete expected from Dems?
