Adding jokes where there aren’t any in the source material deviates too much from the original creator’s intent for my taste. It changes the character

This is an area where it depends heavily on context (and this is where we get into the area where localization is as much an Art and more than translation--including, well, where to go punny in a localization, and HOW to localize a concept that may not be otherwise translatable)

An example I do tend to bring up a lot on "how some chars are legitimately difficult to localize" is the guy in my PFP--Sho Minamimoto, from TWEWY and NEO:TWEWY.

In Japanese, he speaks almost entirely in goroawase and STEM refs, and almost everything is double and triple entendres

So a 1:1 translation is pretty much impossible (I have seen attempts at it--with an EARLY fan translation project for TWEWY before its US release was announced that had JUST gotten to week 2, and in a Spanish fansub of TWEWY:tA. They go poorly)

And yet the English *localization* is masterful

Instead of trying to translate 1:1, they replaced goroawase puns with equivalent English math and STEM mnemonics which *kept the double and triple entendres* AND kept the general flavor of the char (as an absolute chaos gremlin who will literally curse you out in numbers lol)

THAT's an instance where it can be done well, but (again) there is an *art* of knowing WHEN a localization will go better with (say) replacing a goroawase for the square root of 2 (with a double meaning of "People's world, time to watch people") with a SOHCAHTOA pun to keep the double entendre
