If enough people are doing arbitrage you’ll never see $9/kWh outside of extraordinary circumstances. That’s what it peaked at in Texas during the February 2021 freeze for instance.

I know that you work for a grid so you are always looking ahead, but my goal is to get more people to deploy clean energy technology so I'm more focused on the immediate market rather than worrying about what we'll do after there's "too much" of it.

Fair. But $9/kWh is once in a decade. Maybe you could manage 50 cents a kWh on a summer evening during a heat wave though. Which is still a 45 cent arbitrage, so not bad.

I'm not familiar with the New Zealand power grid, but I assume that the $9/kWh wholesale rate was pretty darn rare and is just an example he throughs out in interviews like that, but I think that because of their dependence on hydro power in NZ that during droughts they'll always have shortages.

I would think a drought would mean higher prices all the time, since it’s a long term instead of a momentary supply constraint. In that case your best opportunity would be generating your own power (solar, 0 marginal cost) and selling it in the evening when there’s a short and long term constraint

Yeah, in that video he mentioned drought and that five cent to six dollar daily difference, but I don't know that they were related or not.

An important aspect of early adopters like Forest Lodge Electric Cherries is that they get a lot of income just for being novel too.
