When I left teaching I thought I’d really miss the holidays. I took a job with healthy work hours where I had evenings and weekends off, and was so chilled I completely forgot to take any leave until I was 9 months in and my manager said I’d lose the allowance if I didn’t use it soon…

I worked in a museum for 7 1/2 years after having taught for 4, and I never got the hang of booking holidays before HR got itchy about it in October each year.

I'm now teaching only 2 days a week and permanently knackered...

I think this is more common than many realise. I reckon it’s not just the hours but the intensive, ‘on show’ and fast-paced nature of teaching that can feel so exhausting.

Interesting - we had more leave allowance than UK statutory (28 days ish from recollection), and were allowed to “roll over” 5 days into the following annual leave year, but otherwise it would be lost.

A bunch of states in the US also allow use it or lose it. But if you accept a job with 5 weeks off that is part of your wage, and if they won't let you use it, due to not having anyone to cover while you are away, pretty convenient for the employers huh? They can keep your wages.

Unfortunately, I have experienced something similar but I went on supply and found some wonderful schools and a much more humane for approach for both staff and students in Wales.

Yes but I still enjoy teaching which does surprise my ex teacher friends. I have had a variety of roles. I have taught mainstream primary F1-Y6 then SENCO, after that I moved to special primary and then moved to a secondary special school. All very different roles - I start post 16 in September!

Almost exactly what I used to say “Do teacher training then, there’s a shortage. Can train ‘on the job’ so still get paid”
“Oh I couldn’t do that” because of kids, stress, hours, class size, whatever

I had a similar response to the mother of my ex who bitched about me taking strike action. I smiled calmly and said “just because your house is on fire & you don’t have a sprinkler system doesn’t mean you can get cross about me fighting to keep mine in working order!” I also added…..
