These activities are ALL on TOP of "research tasks" like understanding the field, keeping up with literature, analyzing data, ensuring end to end implementation of research studies, and of course, funding those studies (a huge invisible %)

I say this not to complain but to demarcate the massive, extensive effort it takes to "get visible" about certain topics; I do not think every researcher and scientist is capable of it, it is extraordinary effort to do public outreach.

However I think we can all help, we all have lanes. Whether it's sharing the content of people who DO harness that energy on those platforms, or translating it for our own particular audiences and communities, or even just background support telling us this work is valuable 🥰 - it is all action

We also need safety, nurturing community spaces, places we can workshop ideas and think about our craft and access a community of practice. So in that, I actually strongly believe in separations and find the "filter bubble" argument a little misleading and simplistic for some of us

You can't be in performance mode all the time. And let's make no mistake all the advocacy and outreach is performance mode. The stakes are high and the scrutiny is high and the judgement even from your own camp is high, you will NEVER translate science in a way that pleases everyone. Never.

That's the work & I don't shy away from it. But a hundred-year-view also means confronting the cracks in our own communities, the fact that science has long been cruel to its students and dismissive to its advocates for a very long time. Create safety, you'll get more people capable of the fight.
