Leading on this for software team science required moving beyond seeing myself as simply a subject matter expert to also becoming an expert builder of research structures that allow real world applied labs to create rigorous evidence. This means winning with structural strategies to safeguard rigor

As a public scientist, you will sometimes be criticized by BOTH experts AND general audiences. You need to hone instincts for protecting both you and your people from bad faith backlash -- the trolls, the time-wasting pushes that aren't genuine feedback, those can really demoralize.

If you've followed my work for a while you know I love to do studies & publish with expert practitioners in software who don't necessarily have PhDs (but I would say have PhD-level expertise in every way). For me such community-based partnership has been essential clarity of mission and feedback

Neither science nor industry is built to accommodate true public science. When you forge a space and funding for a public-facing research lab and public-facing research projects as I have done many times, you will often feel like you are breaking everybody's rules. Because! You! Are!

I feel like I drifted into a philosophical thread over a logistical one 😅...anyway, I LOVE my current work to bring public, compassionately rigorous science to developers. It's the most successful thing I've ever done. Too many isolationist messages in science diminished this value for too long.
