I am seeing a lot of fearful advice from academics to hide this work. This is painful.

Extremely timely work from @neillewisjr.bsky.social here worth reading in full. How can we advocate for programs that benefit some specifically? Do NOT be afraid to share these stories.

For the NIH-funded students in the program I ran (1 program, 15 years), that would have meant 130 fewer PhDs, over 55 fewer MDs, several MD/ PhDs, many more than 50 MS/MA professionals, PharmDs, several JDs, Dentists, DVMs, OTs, Counselors, and a huge number of BS-level professionals.

One program - 400 students from every background. These students are running companies, building companies to save lives in medicine, making discoveries, teaching, in your clinics and hospitals, and are leaders all around the country.

Cutting funding for these programs is incomprehensibly short-sighted. We know from Genetics that Alberta or Albert Einstein could come from any region, race, or ethnic group in our nation.

What works for underrepresented students from all backgrounds should be available to all students.
