That's profit. For most high majors (your top 50 schools), their revenue is in the upper 8 or low 9 figures, and the marketing they give the school vastly exceeds any shortfall or transfer to other divisions. Paying Bellichek $10m/year is dumb but not because UNC-Asheville loses money.
If they donβt make profit or break even then it doesnβt matter how much money they make. Itβs a moot point. Everyone is saying they carry the college with all the money they make. Thatβs simply not true. It is all self-serving. Again, Iβm not against college sports. But facts are facts.
It absolutely does. "Profit" is a matter of accounting, universities don't want their athletic departments being profitable, and they, to a large extent, control expenses.
There's a reason no one even thinks of shuttering a high major revenue program, and it's not for the love of sports.
Same error of confusing "profit" (accounting term) with "making money" (real thing).
Forest Gump allegedly lost money. It's not any different than when you see some operation like Clemson's or Oklahoma's ADs claiming they lose money. It's transparently utter nonsense in real terms.
I'd recommend anyone with a stake in this issue review the actual numbers at the Knight-Newhouse College Athletics Database. "Revenue" for NCAA athletics includes institutional subsidies, and that's a big % for the majority of NCAA programs that don't have big ticket sales. https://knightnewhousedata.org/
I would be shocked if Tressie McMillan Cottom hasn't 1) sold that many copies of her book or 2) had that many people buy tickets to her speak this year.
Kind of the way it costs too much money for taxpayers to ever hope to recoup what they paid into Social Security but itβs not too expensive to pay private companies to play at colonizing an uninhabitable planet.
I'm feeling tired of the way we venerate sports in general. It's not like it even results in a healthier, more active society. It's just modern gladiator shows.

Pre-post edit: I checked, and no itβs not. 137$ million coming from the overall budget.
Corporations are in business to make money. Nothing else. Universities have become corporations.
