While I'm not an expert, a common trick I've used is to adjust the bitrate when rendering. The default is usually something like VBR1 or VBR, 1 pass. VBR2 (or 2 pass) takes longer but results in a smaller file size. Just make sure your max bitrate is at least 5 Mbps to keep up the AV quality.
