I feel like the concept of a "group chat" is much less common now because discord servers stifle conversation by segregating lines of thought and it's irritating!!!!!

Every time I'm in a server, new channels get added constantly for new interests and ideas and then it's just more stuff to check to try and talk to anyone. I hate it a lot!

I will also posit that a lot of people whose servers slowly peter out and die might not realize that this may have an effect... Even if ppl generally like the ideas of channels, too many can kill a smaller server really fast

We have a server with a billion channels but rarely enforce anything, our motto is “any channel can become nsfw or oc lore at any time” lol. But I think this only works for smallish friend servers and not any kind of “community”, I also never talk in those :/

Preferences I guess! Personally I like being able to let multiple conversations run in parallel; I don’t want to interrupt anyone talking about their day to share a meme or ask if anyone wants to run roulettes or whatever. That’s a bigger hindrance to me in standard group chats

This is why for discords I make I have two channels: General and memes. Every other channel is either for resources that need to be organized (game guides for example) or something that people don't want to engage with 100% of the time (like smut)

I really don't understand why servers take this approach, it hampers enjoyment. nothing shuts me up fast then someone saying "continue this conversation in # channel." 9/10 times the conversation doesn't even continue because suddenly its in organic and was interrupted.

Probably so people don't see what they don't wanna see, it's a way to filter out junk they don't wanna read while keeping stuff they do wanna read. Keeping "chat clean"

Plus usually another form of feeling some sort of "power" through moderation like a Reddit Moderator
