It has come to my attention that Babylon 5 is now showing on Prime Video, and the original edit of the pilot is an extra on season 1.

I started a rewatch a few years ago and boy howdy, was I amazed at how relevant a 1990s show was for the 2020s.

That show will always be my favorite. It broke ground on a lot of concepts long before other shows, including political intrigue, serialized episodes, use of CGI, etc.

My feeling now is that it had a super-effective use of serialization that has been hard to replicate. It had enough standalone episodes that it didn't feel like one plot stretched to cover a whole season/series. But it was willing to upend and adapt its status quo so the stories had consequences.

Yes…that was the best. I knew how much I appreciated the tight story telling after season 4 because everything had been wrapped up but they carried into season 5 and it just wasn’t the same. Good, but it just was missing something. Idk if you could capture that same magic, even with a reboot.

Yeah, and season 5 had its own travails aside from the resurrection-from-cancellation.

But what I appreciated on my rewatch were the standalone eps from seasons 1-3 that showed what life was like outside the big story arc. Because those are what made me feel how the arc was upending things.
