I do think there's something to be said that the culture here appears to be based on Mesoamerican natives in specific... which is neat because guess who is half Mesoamerican native (YOURS TRULY) so I'm eating this up and rolling it around in my head.
What do you mean? They're just invoking Zeon's nickname for the RX-78-2 Gundam, "shiro akuma" which translates to "the white devil." Clearly they don't mean anything else by that. Definitely not anything about imperialism commited by America in the past. She said with heavy sarcasm.
Oh okay. I just remember growing up hearing white Americans as a group called "White Devils" for various crimes against black, brown, and asian people around the world but especially in Vietnam. It seems like the kind of thing Tomino would clue into and use.
I mostly heard it in old TV shows, movies, and documentaries. Maybe I only heard it once or twice, but it stuck with me because I was little and it was one of the first times I was ever like "maybe we're the badguys sometimes."
Fun fact: this lady's VA, Miya Asakawa, is also one of the writers of the show. She wrote some very iconic episodes including episode 7 (Training To Be A Lady) and the series finale.
