so I've only skimmed, but it's the same authors as previous research which is sadly not as rigorous as it might be; the data these papers pull together are extrapolations from assumptions like every datacentre is as bad as the worst datacentre anywhere. we need reliable figures and these aren't

they are consistent because they nearly all trace back to two specific papers, which trace back to a blog post that doesn't disclose its workings, and all the figures they cite are assumptions and handwaves (I particularly like the one that counts hydroelectric power as data center evaporation!)

my research says that I can't get accurate enough figures to pretend to know what the actual impact is and that grandstanding with inaccurate guesstimates doesn't actually help us understand the impact because we can't hold vendors to account without accurate figures

Microsoft will naturally cast its data centres in the best light it can, but I haven't seen any of the research give figures that match up with the Azure water usage here (where 1 year of genAI data centre water consumption seems to equal one day of a paper mill's water usage)

I wish more talked about this, AI’s massive energy needs - Microsoft starting up its own nuclear reactor to power their own. The fact that we’re using it to create mediocre replacing our own artists and creatives. Plus the dangers of how humans will use it and how powering it will affect everyone.
