The thing that trips people up here is intention— if someone spreads a disinformation campaign by accident, it’s then misinformation by their hand.

The product is still disinformation, but their action in spreading it becomes misinformation if they’re not intentional/fully unaware of the validity.

Serious question. What about willful negligence? I am on the fence it could be either depending on how it’s propagated. Thinking something like memes that go viral and misconstrued events but people don’t want to know the truth, only laugh.

That’s where it can get a little complicated. I would say it depends because it’s contingent on whether or not they’re doing it to *intentionally* cause harm at that point. If they’re plugging their ears and only *FEEL* correct without malicious intention or validation, that’s still misinformation.

Because just wanting to laugh doesn’t necessarily make them malicious per se— it doesn’t make them kind or correct, but it also doesn’t mean they’re purposefully perpetuating the harm. They could be so far removed from it to where they don’t know how fake it is or where to begin.

Yeah I am concerned a lot of times with perpetuating incorrect or harmful information for the lulz. It seems very prevalent since meme culture took off and became a large part of common online and sometimes offline discourse
