But as the applicant, your test tells ME that you are comfortable demanding unpaid crunch of your employees, which is nice to know in advance!
You can tell the applicant not to spend more than X hours on it, but they will do it anyway because OF COURSE they will. They want the job. All the incentives point toward crunch
it’s bad because it’s not effective at demonstrating your skill (they should have already seen your demo reel) and really just shows how much raw time you’re willing to throw at impressing an employer
I'm not hiring a slower animator for example. I also pay them for the time they spend "impressing" me.
I am pretty good with that stuff and probably be willing to animate something for you surely.
Those tests are literally free work. Something I only offer if I would also benefit from it. Which doing a "test" for the CHANCE of a job is NOT beneficial for me.
