Yeah there's a "pattern", every time this happens they re-explain that keeping the source code on-file wasn't something they did back then.

Same thing happened to Kingdom Hearts - this has been a known problem for them for ages. Why are people still surprised?

Honestly tho it’s kinda based of them that they’ll actually rebuild the source code from scratch with all of these games, whether it be Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy VIII or this game, other companies will be like “Oh, we can’t wewelease that game, we don’t have the souwce code 🥺” whereas Square

I mean with Chrono Cross they apparently just emulated it so sure they don’t always do that, but it still impresses me that they will when they have to

They said the exact same thing about Chrono Cross in a PS blog when that remaster happened. It was very insightful. I imagine it’s an issue with most, if not all, of their old PS1 games.

Iirc it affected FFVII and FFVIII as well. From what I remember it wasn't until FFIX that they started to care about preserving things, which helps to explain why the PC port of IX is loads better than both VII and VIII.
