In Mesopotamian art we often see Inanna with an 8-pointed star, as we see much later in Pamela Coleman Smith's depiction of The Star card. Perhaps this symbol references Venus' 8-year cycle of movement, in which the planet returns to the same celestial location every 8 years, as observed from earth.
This pattern of movement is also known as the 5 petals of Venus, or pentagram of Venus, because it shows the 5 synodic cycles that occur within the 8-year period. The path of the rose.
