Isn't it a very privileged position? Say, if you were a (very white and male) Russian peasant from Tver, with all the money, you wouldn't be able to travel WITHIN RUSSIA until ~1905 as you wouldn't be able to get an _internal_ passport. And after 1905 France introduced visas for russians 🤷‍♀️

I know, I'm not "but have you thought of kids with cancer", I'm just "huh he's pretty privileged, Zweig!"

That said, part of central Europe (Poland) was controlled by russia back in 1909. And Austro-Hungary had some hurdles too (male guardian consent for obtaining a pass for women, a fee for Jews)

As the story shows privileges can also be lost. And yeah, it was different people restricting. The reasons people did not have freedoms to travel out of Russia were different reasons than why Central Europe started demanding papers later.

For a woman, or, say, a Jew from Russia, it would have got LEVELS more complicated. Except for a very brief window between 1905 and 1911, neither a Jewish man, or a non-married woman from russia would be able to travel to Europe alone.

And we're still in the realm of "nominally European and white"
