One particularly striking element in Zweig's final writing is the loss of the the freedoms to travel. He lost these freedoms many times over, but just like him all of us never got them back to how carefree the world was before 1914.

That said, part of central Europe (Poland) was controlled by russia back in 1909. And Austro-Hungary had some hurdles too (male guardian consent for obtaining a pass for women, a fee for Jews)
