My favorite Altman is probably The Long Goodbye, just kind of a perfect movie, but my second favorite is a big old car crash tie of 3 Women, Nashville, Gosford Park, McCabe, and The Player, and the next tier down are still better than almost anybody else’s, Short Cuts, Thieves Like Us, Brewster.

Oh god, forgot California Split, which is also my total favorite (just STILL not on BluRay STILL so didn’t leap right to mind). Most underrated Altman is probably Popeye, or Secret Honor, or Kansas City. OC & Stiggs is truly awful tho, only for completists, Fool For Love not much better.

Yes, amazingly Bob Altman made an anarchic teen comedy, but it was SO bad the studio held onto it for four years before leaking it out to theaters. Young Cynthia Nixon gets a fun dance sequence, Martin Mull is a sleazy women’s clothing tycoon, & live music from King Sunny Adé. All else ROUGH lol.
