PSN being down should probably be a wake up call for Microsoft / Xbox about how much money you can potentially lose if you rely on others' ecosystems to provide your access to customers...

Wake up call for consumers to use other platforms that allow you to play games when their service is offline. And certainly not to pay extra for a service that treats you like shit.
I had a windows phone and it's not the same. Microsoft was late to an overcrowded market with WP and had several blockers beyond their control ( i.e. Google) . Xbox is a leader the gaming space (excluding hardware) and very well positioned for the future. So not really comparable.
yet they keep moving further and further away from it. they can say they won’t but there are literally only two games i need a series x or s to play and they’re both also on pc lmao
they are selling game pass subscriptions, and you can't get game pass on either PlayStation or Switch, so they are not moving anywhere. They have also committed to at least 2 future devices .
you can get game pass on a pc. next xbox will probably just be a pc. we’ll see i guess, but i don’t think game pass and game pass alone is a sustainable business model lmao
Would a fancy shiny DEVICE get you online when the entire infrastructure is down? No. It's still a shiny doorstop. By not losing money selling boxes, Microsoft drops their cash into WAY WAY WAY better network and infrastructure arrangement. Sony loses money on every PlayStation sold bud.
I panicked because I went on my xbox after I realized what was going on with PSN and shit didn't work there either so I was like "HERE TOO!?" but it turns out it was because my internet had an outage at the actual perfect time
Fair opinion, but that’s exactly what they’re doing. Sony has a much larger user base so if you’re selling games it’s just good business to sell games there. I don’t think they will ever give up there ecosystem it’s the most valuable asset they have.
Since Microsoft / Xbox uses their own ecosystem for online access most of the time, this is a strange take. Also, why does something negative about Sony / PlayStation then in turn needs for Microsoft / Xbox to be mentioned?
Xbox is going to have consoles for as long as consoles are a thing. They are just also tapping into the market of casual gamers who don’t want to buy a $400+ console yet
PSN was hosted by Sony until just before the launch of PS4 when it was brought to AWS. However, we currently don’t know that AWS is the problem. It could be so many things, I think people are frustrated with the lack of transparency
You are aware that Microsoft have data centres with 5+ 9s of availability supporting much more lucrative ventures than computer games? If Microsoft's data centres shit themselves, we've got bigger problems than not getting into Xbox Live.
Also a great case study against "play anywhere" and streaming games. It's a fine option, but if it's your only way to play your games and servers go down. You're SOL
Im kinda curious to find out what exactly happened. Last night the service status told me “yeah we are all good here” and I assumed it was my LAN after screwing around in my DNS. Now that I know a wire got crossed… well lets just say I want to know who to blame
Crazy how often this kind of thing has happened in the past 5 years or so. I am remembering something identical in early PS5 or PS4 era. And we still want to abandon on disk games? Sad
I see the dickheads have followed you to Bluesky. You make a fair point though. If you abandon one platform for another, you limit its availability. I have a feeling PlayStation will take the Xbox approach eventually too. Get your software on as many platforms as possible. Stack those bags!
So I understand the benefits of physical media but it seems like the populous has determined the conveniences largely outweigh them. Well over 60% of sales are digital at this point and PC it’s almost total.
There's also a few other factors at play here. Games are getting massive, 50+ gig games weren't commonplace 10 years ago, now we're contending with games that are 130-ish.
Games are also more dependent on streaming a lot of data in memory, a task that is beyond what optical media can do.+
Combine this with games more often than not using multiple gigabytes of RAM and it's no wonder why nearly all games these days require an install. Even a hard drive is oftentimes faster than a blu-ray disc.
This is why I worry about Xbox giving away its competitive state. PS barely trying as is (outage with barely updates, no regional PS5 pricing, charge you extra for stand) inagine what they can get away with when theres no other company to keep them competitive.

They should just rename themselves Microsoft Gaming or something and be done with it.
I think Nintendo learned earlier to rely on in house networks they have full control and ownership over.
(I could be wrong, but Nintendo seems to be doing well with this.)
This is like saying they shouldn’t sell games on Steam cause they had an outage.
