I’m hoping (because I’m trying to do it) that a third option is completely changing career in one’s mid-40s. None of the tech-attached NDAs matter if I’m roasting coffee or fixing bikes for a living.

Depends how hard they sue you for breaking them. Other people's lawyers are very expensive.

Part of my point was that switching which hobby I do for pay kinda negates the relevance of any plausible suit.

For example, I don’t think [hedge fund based in Bridgeport, CT] will ever care if I go wrench on bikes in St. Louis, MO.

NDA or Non-compete?

For the example I chose, because I was a contractor, that bracketed phrase is the way I’m ostensibly legally bound to refer to them, including on my resume/CV.

I have also been bound both by NDAs (and still am?) and non-competes (hasn’t ever mattered).

You might be over-transacting on the terms.
