While it's true that prior to Joe Biden the carbon offset market was mostly unregulated. Biden changed that, but now idk so...

IMO, a land use offset that secured some above/below ground soil carbon for awhile, enhanced some biodiversity, held some water but had a 10-30% of burning every year, could be called both a legit “other service” asset but also a “scam” if sold as permanent CO2 sequestration that reduced mitigation.

Land use offsets are probably the most inexpensive, but I'm a big fan of the ones that stop CH4 emissions from landfills or stop agricultural waste burning by pyrolyzing it into biochar for example.

The entire industry has been tarnished by a few bad actors and statements from some FF execs.

Biden's Department of Justice was also able to indict and get a conviction of some of those grifters involved in those African stove carbon offset schemes and others too.

I think that after the voters chose a pro-fossil fuel industry government that quality carbon offsets are even more important.

Arguably, much of what you’ve put under the land use offsets category here are really Payments for Ecosystem Services. That could be done as a side benefit of a carbon offset mechanism but doesn’t have to be and, in fact, might be better done if decoupled from the carbon offset market.
