I am enthralled by ginkgo. Some trees seem to have positioned themselves to thrive in a human-dominated world. The color transitions and leaf drop are still poorly understood. Maybe someday when I'm old, I will study the phenomenon. Gotta write some books first.

I almost tagged you in a picture of a set I saw last weekend - three in a row against the side of a building, two fully leafed and one with a perfect circle of yellow leaves at its feet. I’m never going to stop wondering how the leaf drop happens!

I have studied a large nuber of these ancient chinkapin oaks. Though I can't core this tree, I have records of chinkapin oaks this size in the 300-400 year range, and one was 800 years. I describe the age of these trees, entirey presettlement in origin, in my book Venerable Trees.
