It is the Season of the Invasive here (privets, honeysuckles, MF rose), although Black Elderberry beat them all to the punch. Tuliptree is always the first proper tree and usually pops ~2 weeks from now, although occasionally far earlier, even into January.

Shrubs ahead of trees here: red-flowering currant in bloom, twinberry and blue elderberry leafing out, ninebark starting to poke little buds out, filberts hanging out their pollen packets, tall mahonia blooming, manzanita in bloom. Dogwood buds are getting bigger but not yet open.

I bought a Twinberry bush last fall, can't wait to see what it looks like in bloom!

The twinberry isn't fancy, but it is a wonderful habitat plant. Paired yellow blossoms that hummingbirds adore, followed by paired shiny black berries that are food for many bird species. The best part is that it blooms and makes berries for an extended period, not just 'bloom-berries-done'.

Oh boy! At the same time, I bought an array of black and red currants, so the birds are in for a big treat every year.
