it was near perfect. only one shity skit, prison skit, couple of right winger haters on the show, Chapelle, Rock, but mostly was good ppl and very funny. music was great. one poor act only, Lil Wayne. Roots were good tho. idk why Lorne keeps trying to get right wing shit on show. frustrating man
basically everyone in the star-studded audience has a spot in the show. it feels like you were invited to a celebrity dinner party and everyone's playing charades
I thought it was lousy how many past cast members were simply ignored. Robert Downey Jr, Danitra Vance, Terry Sweeney, Anthony M Hall, Brad Hall, etc. At least Tim Kazurinsky got a call back in the Adam Sandler song.
Someone recently pointed out to me that corporations know how to weaponize nostalgia to turn more profit, and now so many things feel like manipulation.
Yup. Lorne Michaels may honestly be the king of it. SNL always predicated upon nostalgia because frankly its peaks are always way lower than we remember.
The comedy of most eras becomes instantly stale and this modern iteration rarely does anything inventive or truly clever
Monetizing nostalgia is at the root of all this generational wankery. "Gen X is the toughest! We drank radioactive water from rusty hoses and our latchkey meanness turned out like the best Saturday morning cartoons!" and shit like that. Things are "retro" in 5 minutes. Albums have anniversaries now.
SNL, even when it was funny (1975-1977?), had a LOT of filler. Makes sense to ignore the individual shows, wait fifty years, and just watch the condensed version.
Did anybody notice the Renaissance art backgrounds during the music performances? I feel like the artists are teasing a real-life Renaissance... which is precisely what would happen if they collectively broke out of the system and blew the whistle.
I’ve heard that the producers made all the acts commit to rehearsing for at least a week prior and the show is so damn tight and every act sounded great
It's hard to make spontaneous comedy in that specific anniversary setting but it was so amazing to see all those big guns of comedy, acting and music in one place at the same time.
Yes, but it had Meryl Streep in an alien abduction skit, leading to the priceless line “under my pants, this devil wears nada.” That alone makes SNL50 worth it.
I liked it! Hard to hit all the major skits from 50 years, but it was a good balance of skits and cameos. People also need to remember there is so much more than just this show- also a documentary, concert, online stuff, etc.

Welcome break from the shitshow that is US under Tangerine Toad
Nope.
It ROCKED.
I enjoyed SNL50. It made me laugh and cry. Im surprised they got away with some stuff on prime time. Especially in todays political climate.
