Tonight's viewing (as the rest of the family have never seen it) is The Night Of The Hunter, source of perhaps the greatest movie promo shot ever released.

If you love The Night Of The Hunter and you're looking for more Southern Gothic films with a fairy tale feel and striking visuals I'd highly recommend THE FOOL KILLER (1965), the only US film by Mexican director Servando González, starring Anthony Perkins and Edward Albert.
There are a lot of incredible stylised moments in THE FOOL KILLER, including a shot looking up from under the surface of a river, a flash of vertical landscape, some 4th wall breaking, and numerous weird, off-kilter compositions. It's great.
The treatment of Lilian Gish's character in that movie is one of the odder things in film. Laughton and Agee clearly want to make her a less-than-perfect character, but the subtleties get overwhelmed by the obvious positives, climaxing with the final benediction. A good idea that doesn't come off.
Probably my favorite film ever! I made my mom (then a pastor) watch it & she perma-banned the hymn Robert Mitchum sings because it creeped her out so much.
Such an incredible film. Such a tragedy that Laughton never directed another. We combined two of the songs and included it in our EP of film songs, the Cinder Tree! https://youtu.be/YQZwj75ArWU?si=i43nts3v7v15Z7pQ
