Randomly saw this new United Airlines seatmap for their 787 flights on Reddit and I was flabbergasted. There are only 10 rows of normal seats on this entire airplane. Over half is taken up by little lie flat bed suites. Who is affording this or flying enough to get upgraded to this? Boggles my mind - ThreadSky

I have this same questions every time I see so many A380s in the air. I go "Damn, I want to fly on one of those" and then check ticket prices and forget that dream.

UAL knows that businesspeople's employers will pay $$$ for those on certain business routes. They actually have multiple 787 seat maps depending on whether the route is premium-heavy or economy-heavy.

I’ve wondered which companies these are that allow their employees to fly something other than economy. I’ve always had to upgrade at my own expense.

It's almost always companies that want people in an office the next day and rationalize that paying for an upgrade to J class with a rested person costs them less money than losing them for a day while they rest in a hotel they have to pay for.

There's also the quirk about how airlines have exploited so-called "business class" (J-fares) and improved its service there to work around company rules around no first-class bookings. UA was a pioneer on that front.

UA's hubs (EWR/SFO/IAD/ORD) are also located in heavy finance/government/tech hubs. It's not for companies to fly their plebes like us, it's for executives/businesspeople. So it's wortwhile to have a J-heavy subfleet for some routes, while other frames have more Y class seats.
