The related species K laxiflora is diploid and non-clone forming, so it does make seeds. My species, however, I think only reproduce clonally.

K. laxiflora makes plantlets if you detach the leaves from the mother plant. In daigremontiana the LEC gene is mutated so it doesn‘t produce viable seeds. Kalanchoë is such a fascinating genus 😍

Huh interesting. Is there a time course RNA-seq dataset for detached leaf? I suppose one can find candidate genes and compare genomic loci to K. daig
