I don't necessarily believe Netanyahu didn't know, and I think he would have reasons to put a story out there that he didn't know. Not sure how precisely you mean "something like this" but several previous US presidents have acted independently of Israel and clipped its wings, slapped it down.

That's true for many, perhaps most of them. But there's a few hundreds Hamas fighters caught on 7th October, and those sentenced for long periods (around 1,500). That's the real demand of Hamas
