to be absolutely clear: this is not me arguing over hereditary citizenship. children should have the citizenship of their parents’ countries! the point is that basing citizenship on whether a child’s parents are “loyal” to a country ends up disqualifying a lot of US citizens born abroad.

this post by @notalawyer.bsky.social made me think of a guy I know. he’s a US citizen born abroad bc his dad is a US citizen. at the time he was born, his dad was living in a foreign country, married to a citizen of that country, intending to remain in the country.
