I feel like if our personal conversations with those who disagree on politics should be intimately personal and empathetic (heresy, I know). If we cannot genuinely say “What makes you supportive of [this policy] that affects [me, my kids, this person]?” I fear our enmity will consume us.

Not, "Oh, I'm sorry this is happening to you, but you'll be ok."
More like, "OH, I had no idea this is affecting people I know & that changes my whole perspective."
I have not found those conversations helpful.
I recently had a friend tell me he was wrong (for voting for tRump) and I praised him for being big enough to admit that.
