The Economist: "THEY TALKED by phone for over two hours, but Vladimir Putin left Donald Trump with almost nothing to show for it—a slap in the face that only a man possessed of unbounded chutzpah could pretend was a win."

The Economist is misreading the event hopelessly. Trump wasn't seeking any concessions from Putin. He didn't ask for any concessions. He & Putin are allies. Therefore, it required no chutzpah on Trump's part. The outcome was exactly what Trump wanted. Shame to see The Economist fall into this trap
Trump is, at the same time, setting a trap for Putin.
Trump's bet of US civilian (not military) boots on the ground is probably worth making. He would be essentially daring Putin to attack US personnel, and I'm skeptical that Putin would risk that dare.

Let me guess: 30 minutes of praising Trump's leadership, an hour of Putin's homemade history, and 30 minutes of empty threats and demands for something that isn’t his?
