Is backyard cricket something that exists in England? Do they have big enough backyards for that? I suppose the other thing about backyard cricket is that it can really only exist in a suburban context - so in Australia, post-1950s. Before that it would have been street/laneway and park cricket.

It's also possible that suburban sprawl itself has hurt backyard cricket - if children, who lack access to accessible transport options, can't safely access the in person company of other children in their free time, then that's also going to limit access to unstructured outdoor activity/play.

Hi, yes we have loads of back garden cricket, although gardens are shrinking so it is park cricket predominantly for many kids.
Ultimately it is very much a private school game in the south of the country, which is not a good thing.
