Oh wow, okay so over here in the UK all of my English tutors right the way through to a-levels (16-18yrs) were all male. And my last two for English Lang and Lit were both the most amazing and passionate educators and Polish guys with English as a second or third language. I completely lucked out

That’s interesting. I only had 1 male English teacher from K-12. Even most of my English professors were women. When I started teaching, there was only 2 men (including me) in the English department meetings and I was the only one on my team. Now we have 3 in 6th grade (including me) though.

Education preschool (Sweden); ages 1-6. Current occupation storyteller, I teach the art of storytelling, all ages. An insight is that having the knowledge and experience to handle children makes handling adults easy; they generally are just taller, though sometimes more misbehaved than kids.

I am a retired teacher. I taught 1st, 3rd, and 5th grades. The last several years I taught Primary Basic Skills, a program developed by my district in which students who were struggling in either language or math could be tutored on the basis of concepts with which they were struggling.

You can really have fun with the kids with creative writing and reading. The downside to ELA is it’s heavily tested so schools and the districts are obsessed with test scores, data, preparing them for the state test, etc.

Oh I feel that! That’s the only thing holding me back—both subjects I’ve taught haven’t had state testing attached so I’ve been very spoiled with the freedom of getting to use my class time how I want to. I don’t envy that part of the job but you’re doing incredible work

Thank you! It’s annoying and something to keep in mind as it’s part of teaching ELA, but I still largely have the freedom to plan my week out however I want as long as I hit on the standards. I typically do a fun creative writing activity on Fridays.
