Amidst another flurry of news, an official adds at the end that Trump has signed an Executive Order saying that “only the President or Attorney General can speak for the US…as to what the law is.”

But, if you mention the obvious indicators that the United States is backsliding into autocracy, you're treated like a hysterical loon.

Doesn't matter how blatant they are about it. Doesn't matter what history they flagrantly repeat.

Denial is comfortable. So it's normalized.

I mean, when I talk about what's actually happening, with other people who know what's actually happening, I *feel* like a hysterical loon. Even if you don't want to be in denial, it's really hard to believe it all, because it's so wildly ridiculous and awful!

I think that's what makes statements like Pritzker's today so important. In my research, I see this time and time again as an extremist movement becomes mainstream and goes down the path of authoritarianism.

A general sense of disbelief by everyone (including a profound denial by many extremists).

There's an "unreality" to reality when systems fall apart. It helps when serious people in positions of authority can call it out for what it is.

If for no other reason than to ground ourselves.
