like i don't think we should keep them totally unexposed to technology, it's important that they know how to navigate the world we have, but holy shit, i cannot imagine just...not wanting to read to your kid!

my mom had dyslexia that wasn't diagnosed until late adulthood, so she struggled, but still read to me, and when I learned to read she had ME read to HER. I read the entire Harry Potter series out loud to her. it was a huge bonding activity for us.
Though my mom and I have had plenty of squabbles over the years, we've always had a nice bond over book/movie/tv "aha!" moments. First one was her reading the "Harry Potter discovers Voldemort on Professor Quirrel's head" scene to me.
As a new parent, like, look, sometimes I'd rather be doing something else, but holy crap I read to my kid every day despite myself. It's so much more than "entertaining" them.
I mention this to people, the idea that perhaps we shouldn't toss ipads at 3 year olds and let them become zombies for hours on it, and get a lot of "LOL BOOMER" replies and its so weird.
It's *such* a great way for parents and kids to bond. We still let our kid play games, and that only encouraged her to read more: between books and text-heavy games like Pokémon and Animal Crossing, when she started school her teachers couldn't believe how good her reading skills were.
it was a good incentive for us; when my 12-year-old was younger she worked so hard at reading so she could play a pokemon on her own. now she has so many book i had to buy a kindle to save space
Our pediatrician has basically from our daughters birth been a huge advocate of reading, including the office regularly providing books during visits. We had always planned to anyway, and I'm sure not every dr is like that but this is wild to me.
This lady who lived down the street from my family in the 90s apparently didn't read to her kids. My mum (in training to be a teacher at the time) was completely taken aback.
I'll never understand it. Reading to my niece is a joy. ❤️
