Oof. There really is no humanity in any of these decisions. It's so frustrating.

Me too! She's a wonderful biologist and I hope will be able to continue the important work she was doing.

Know that you're not alone. We're all feeling it.

Ahhh -- now I see. Thanks for expanding. Yes -- publishing is definitely the currency in science, and I don't see that changing any time soon.
I wonder if there are ways to keep it the currency, while also making it more accessible and streamlined to get results published.

Totally -- "not interested" is also true here. Very frustrating!

Yeah— it’s all pretty depressing.

Absolutely— it’s a huge setback that we won’t know the true effects of for some time.

Yeah -- it's really discouraging and built on the lie that we can't have these nice things and support early career scientists and researchers.

This is a very interesting observation. Can you expand more on what you mean by an unduly high value? I'm curious to learn more about your perspective!

Yeah -- it's tricky. I'm not sure self-publishing is the right way to go either. I have a hard time trusting science that hasn't been peer-reviewed.
I believe we need to make the whole process more streamlined and easier for people to participate. That way we can get more eyes on every paper.

Why do they always make the submission process so unnecessarily difficult???

Agreed! They also look so busy out there.

Totally! I find their stripes to be so beautiful.

It means that they all breed around the same time so that they give birth in a short window of time.
I think for these mongooses that means that all of the females in a single troop give birth within a couple days.
So cool!

Absolutely! The term “peer-reviewed” has been watered down so much that it’s effectively meaningless.
I believe we need more eyes on every paper to help bring trust and credibility back to the process and ensure that we can rely on the published literature.

💯! Science can't and shouldn't be held back by these awful policies.

5. Is there anything else you think the authors need to fix in their article to be fit for publication?
6. Do you have any concerns about the ethics of this research?
Hope this helps and happy to elaborate!

3. Regarding the study design and methods, what do the authors need to fix or improve upon to be fit for publication?
4. Regarding the analysis and interpretation of their findings, what do the authors need to fix or improve upon to be fit for publication?

Happy to share! We created a structured review process at @stacksjournal.bsky.social after chatting with researchers across disciplines. Here are the 6 questions we ask every reviewer:
1. What did the authors do a good job with?
2. How do you think this research will contribute to the field?

So happy to hear this!
I think a great perspective for every reviewer to start their review with is answering the question: How do you think this research will contribute to the field?
Every new piece of research will certainly add something so it's helpful to get in that frame of mind to start.

And we're run by these values at @stacksjournal.bsky.social:
#ScientificPublishing should be fair, accessible, & transparent.
So for those of you growing tired of the system of publishing we're stuck in, take a look. I think you'll find it refreshing. 5/5

So I started @stacksjournal.bsky.social. A scientific journal that believes:
- Science happens best in collaboration
- All credible research is valuable and should be shared
- Publishing should be designed for better science instead of better profits

Being a scientist myself, I knew the power & determination of our scientific community.
And I knew that we could do more to lift up science, bring trust back to peer review, and equip all scientists to share their discoveries.
It was time to bring collaboration back to #ScientificPublishing.

Over the course of my career in academia, I became acutely aware that #ScientificPublishing is not working for scientists.
By now, we all know the problems: expensive, burdensome, inaccessible, biased (and more!).
I wanted to help and leave something better than I found it.
