Meet Kelly (she’s bad). We had clicker trained all of the baby hens not eat from specific areas in the garden, and they NEVER did. People couldn’t believe it. Then came Kelly. Gifted from a friend… she taught all to be garden terrorists. Kelly is why we get to design custom chicken protection. 🌱

Custom for a garden! 🌱 Prototype one and two, and still not right, but we're getting closer. Any guesses what they are? They'll be painted black so they're less visible! I never imagined I’d be custom-designing and welding pieces for clients to create elegant problem solving solutions in gardens!

Our first Town Hall 🎉 (recorded for later viewing). Our Duke U. soil scientist is fascinating! Link for asking fire-related questions also 🌱 thanks to @jstpwalsh.bsky.social for making this come to life! #EatonFire #AltadenaFire #PalisadesFire #SoilScience #CitizenScience #ClimateWarming #LAFires

3 months ago I was so rapt with fear for clients & community, I asked @jstpwalsh.bsky.social if he could find me a soil scientist to help launch a study. Well, he did. We did it! 🤯 Possibly the only with citizen science. ❤️‍🩹 🌱 This would never have happened without Justin. Town hall THIS Wednesday!

With bird flu on the rise, it’s a good day to buy KN95s, respirators and respirator cartridges while there’s still available with NIOSH standards. 🌱 😭

There are funds for free soil testing for Altadena, & insurance covers some also. See my posts on how each debris removal dusts neighbors… 1/3 come up with contaminants. Our soil study is with Duke U. @jstpwalsh.bsky.social & I will dig & test again soon. LMU, Davis & others also have studies. 🌱

Shellfish could be used to filter & remediate LA fire contaminates in the ocean. But 🚫 cleanup has happened, so California-Mexico shellfish likely has lead, arsenic, asbestos, cadmium (the stuff feeding algae blooms) killing birds, whales, dolphins, Mexico—N. Ca). 🌱 Do not eat for the next 2 years.

Also hiring an Experienced Beekeeper you’ll be trained in #RegenerativeBeekeeping (1 of 5 globally!). Our hives never swarm, we never split or sell nucs, never collapse (not one in a decade), we prevent usurpation, we don’t introduce new honeybees to ecosystems, we limit hive numbers per acre. 🌱

A very teal blue garden flower eater. Cricket? Eat all you want! Magic basil is prettier than African Blue, both have edible flowers and make a tea, both bloom year round in S. California (a win in climate warming for pollinators). 🌱

We value equity, self expression, and diversity. We have 2 of 14 still on 6+ years, the rest stay 2.5 years min. Most leave for benefits (which we don’t yet pay, nor myself a salary). We are SO lucky to have our team of 9, (usually 11), and need more #LosAngeles #Gardening 🌱

I tripped over a very full bee feeder but missed a towering beehive… in a very tight space with 3 other beekeepers (2 of them clients), but dropped the F bomb… told @jstpwalsh.bsky.social in shame who said, “you have a potty mouth when stressed,” to which I replied, “f…” Without a thought. 🌱 😭

First bumble bee of the year (super late considering they’re furry, can forage earlier & in colder temps than other native bees (& out compete all as a result). Too fast for a photo…but look at this adorable hover fly - her babies eat up to 400 aphids compared to lady bug babies eating only 50. 🌱

The bodies are more wasp than bees, but all bees descended from wasps (the first in the late Crestataceous period, 150 million years ago). 🌱 A replica of this charm and necklace was the best gift ever from my honey, @jstpwalsh.bsky.social

A beauty of a hummingbird I found today flew into our client’s gorgeous windows. 2nd photo: a window with birddivert.com - you cannot see it, but birds can. Saves birds from windows. Saves windows from ugly stickers. Windows should all be required to be mfg with this tech, in every state. 🌱

@latimes.com tells every gardener what our Duke University Urban & Fire soil expert said “isn’t safe advice.” …and LAT fails to tell any that those sunflowers can’t go in any landfill - very few accept contaminants. Who wants to live near ‘em? 🌱 latimes.com/00000196-6574-d12e-afbe-f7fd791a0000-123
