The bioinspired design framework & the inspiration for this entire unit comes from Dr. Emilie Snell-Rood's paper (with Dr. Dimitri Smirnoff) 🧪 iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1...

Here is the free @galacticpolymath.com unit we developed to help guide student individual projects to identify a real world problem, research, explore, and propose a solution based on inspiration from biology. #EduSky #PBL #ProjectBasedLearning www.galacticpolymath.com/lessons/en-U...

Indeed. On a personal note, I founded @galacticpolymath.com & spent the last 4 yrs helping scientists do outreach. We may not be able to continue. Many early career PIs we're working w have shelved proposals to wait for dust to settle. This will hit a generation of young scientists especially hard

yeah, absolutely appalling. Since I've only been on the proposal side of NSF, I don't know exactly how this is going to impact things. The human cost is certainly bad... the long term cost of these multi-institutional purges to science and society is going to be enormous

congratulations! I know how hard it is to keep publishing after leaving academia. Way to follow through, & in Nature Comms no less 👏

it's unacceptable & absolutely mind boggling that this mass firing happened with no pushback. Cowardly is the word. The phrase "removing 168 people who included most of the agency’s probationary employees and **all of its experts**" hit me like a bag of bricks...can science in the US even go on?

thanks for sharing your journey, Katie! I think it deserves an even bigger audience. Have you considered/are you planning to pitch this as an op ed somewhere? I feel like the NSF cuts/chaos haven't risen above the noise

thanks for your reporting. I continue to be amazed by the lack of general concern about plastic pollution and waste disposal in general. Also very sad we're pulling out of the international plastic treaty negotiations. Anyway, I appreciate your work!

we just watched Master and Commander last night. Have you seen it? This scene bothered me, but it must kill you 😅 Those are mealworms right? youtu.be/440l8poSQiA?...

ℹ️The GRFP gives PhD students 3 yrs of funding to pursue research & not have to teach classes to pay rent. This allowed me to take on more ambitious research projects, such as a review paper that is my most cited work. Losing this program would hurt early career scientists right out of the gate

it's bleak. Not sure if you're an AtLA fan, but it feels like this part of the finale

why was it down? What has changed? Every day now when we see this sort of thing: is this temporary? Permanent? Sabotage or just cascading chaos? 🤷

@evornithology.bsky.social how'd we do on this one?

Defend science by talking about its greater value to society. Training the next generation of scientists. Science's impacts your local and regional economies. Science saves lives. Do not get baited into debates about idealogical talking points which are simply meant to invoke fear and anger.

paste values only is such a valuable shortcut I use every day! Also surprised how few people use ALT+TAB (PC) and CMD+TAB (Mac) to switch between programs

yeah, love that one! Also an opportunity to tie into what powers the COVID PCR tests everybody's so familiar with now
