When the pub shuts I beg my mates, Let’s try that new karaoke place eh? Home time, they mutter. They know I’m dreading my empty house. I find that bar by myself. I slur our song to strangers, mangling the lyrics. Baby this can't be the end. We had it all. Missing all the things. Find it once again.

A basket of adorables.

At the first raven call I’m outside each day at dawn rain hail or shine with my seed bag but so far the ravens keep ignoring me. I try cawing but they fly off. One time a magpie swooped me I still have a bright blue bruise. I hear the neighbours laughing about me but wait till I have my raven army.

Pretty sunset, says Mum. Pretty ordinary, says Dad. Pia, says Mum, Can you see any shapes in the clouds? An angel, I say. Bit obvious, says Dad. Well what shapes can you see eh Rod? says Mum. A harpy, says Dad. Mum plucks a tuft of daisies from beside our picnic blanket and sits ripping them apart.

After the Aurora Borealis tour we reach the hotel shivering despite our thermals and puffer coats. I grab chairs near the fire while Ali goes to the bar. Then he beckons me over. “I think I dropped my wallet in that field.” I look longingly at our Brennivins, then to the barman. “Tekur þú ávísanir?”

Street art.

My Aunty Linda calls me, all excited about the pics I just emailed her. “You should send them to all the newspapers!” I have to explain that, as a joke, I added the sexy mermaid (blurred for authenticity) to the underwater shots I took on my snorkelling holiday. Boomers really can’t spot Photoshop.

I tell Dan we should decide about the honeymoon quickly, or it’ll be too late to book. I don’t care, he says, as long as there’s a good wifi connection. My heart’s set on Venice but I don’t bother telling him again. It’ll be a surprise. I’m going to run away with a gondolier who kisses me properly.

We were on the edge of the bush beside the Western Highway, hitchhiking to Lexton when the acid took hold. I remember saying, “My backpack’s getting very heavy,” then the sky was full of huge galahs, all swooping and screeching. And a voice was screaming, “We’ll never make it to Rainbow Spirit now!”

I skim the menu and order my one option: baby spinach salad, no aioli. On a diet? my date says. I’m vegan, I say. He smirks and turns to the server. Crab bisque starter, veal for main. Sure, she says, giving me a sympathetic look. Never letting Big Sis set me up again. Even Tinder wasn’t this bad.

They pester me day and night: How is it that I alone survived the shipwreck? I say I can make no plain account, the night of the storm is so muddled in my head. I’ve taken care to hide my locket filled with sage, a parting gift from Mother as I left London. Such a laic trinket can hang you in Salem.

Mummy flinches when I play my classical dub remixes. I didn’t invest in all those music lessons for this trash, she says. I snap, How’s it trashier than Handel? Party jams for the 1%. She purses her lips, snaps shut her violin case and sweeps out. Her car roars away to her job at the Conservatory.

“Wow. When I started an a-cappella prison choir specialising in Springsteen songs, I never dreamt we’d make an album, let alone record Badlands with the Boss. This Grammy’s for everyone who made us Number 1 on both iTunes and Spotify …” I wake up. My cellmate’s snoring louder than a Van Zandt solo.

I see the old amusement park has been demolished. At fifteen I’d sneak in on summer nights with my secret boyfriend. It was already decrepit then, the merry-go-round horses furred with moss. We relinquished virginities in the Ghost Train. Risky, but not as much as daylight reality. I still miss him.

Hell yeah.

July is the cruelest month for craft-market stallholders. Icy drizzle, foot traffic drying up unlike the mud. I’m rugged up in my camelhair coat. I could just sell on Etsy but my artisanal baby gear still does better here, where mums-to-be can cradle booties in one palm and imagine tiny feet within.

Wake up. Think. Whose couch are you on? Did you make any money yesterday? How long before you outstay your welcome/run out of friends/have to hitchhike back to your parents’ house? Could you pretend to be someone else again? Will you ever have a real home? Get up. Make coffee. Make yourself useful.

Today I picked her a bunch of pretty blue flowers from the highway verge then made chicken tikka masala, her favourite. I’m wearing the Astro Boy t-shirt she teased me about when we met. I’m setting the table when she gets home from work. “Surprise! Happy birthday!” She gasps. “How did you get in?”

Dad asks for Rootie Tootie. He means Tootie Fruitie, I say. And Bubble ‘O Bill for him, he says. Vanilla, I say. Rootie Tootie’s a Hank Williams song. Also a Monk track. Once we’d argue: country or jazz. We eat our ice cream by the shore. He forgets my name but recalls the ice cream I liked at six.

Yo bestie. Vacay still skibidi. In Bristol to meet some aunt Mom found through 23andMe who lives in a castle. Pic: Me+Mom+Aunty Efa+tapestry of our fam crest with silkworms+beehives. The tea is the bees stung a Viking army to death. No one knows how our dead relatives trained them. So out of pocket.
