I finally settled on a Top 24 of 2024 list: boxd.it/Eo9ke My Top 10: A Different Man Anora Flow Ghostlight Green Border Kneecap The Brutalist The Seed of the Sacred Fig The Substance Wicked #FilmSky

Time to post #LetterboxdFriday and my #LastFourWatched: • The Six Triple Eight: Diane Warren Strikes Again • Padding in Peru gets a generic tropical adventure story. • Jurassic Park feeds my inner child (the bodies of corrupt businessmen). • Remembering Gene Wilder grew my watchlist. #FilmSky

Sonic 3 peaked with “Happy Bea Arthur Day” and was downhill from there.

Watched the 15 #Oscars nominated shorts this weekend. My personal faves from each category: Documentary: I Am Ready, Warden Animated: Wander to Wonder Live Action: I’m Not a Robot #FilmSky

The Oscar nominated animated shorts had a lot more stop motion penis than expected.

This #LetterboxdFriday has a less than stellar #LastFourWatched: • Sam Wilson’s Captain America doesn’t thrill • Bring Them Down was entertaining but motivations were lacking. • Between the Lines was fun but dated • The Original Kings of Comedy was dated and very little fun. #FilmSky

Headed to see Bring Them Down with Barry Keoghan and Christopher Abbott. I already know I’m going to impose homoerotic subtext on the movie.

Why did no one tell me that Julia Louis Dreyfus is playing Tulsi Gabbard in the Marvel universe?

Taking a group of queers to see The Umbrellas of Cherbourg during the Super Bowl. This is what I mean when I say “We’re an Oscars household.”

Sometimes I re-read my reviews on Letterbox’d when some likes them. My review of “The Worst Person in the World” ends with one of my favorite conclusions: Maybe "Fleabag with Fjords" is too reductive, but everyone needs that hook. boxd.it/2AtJm5

This #LetterboxdFriday celebrates cinema with my #LastFourWatched: •Tampopo is so goofy and weird sexy. •Nickel Boys was inventive but preferred the book. •The Seed of the Sacred Fig thrills with a family under repression. •Shortcomings had such a hateable lead. #FilmSky

Seeing this movie in a sold out crowd is the best way. Tampopo is a unique mix of genre spoof and homage; mixed with a swath of delightful vignettes. Honors and critiques our connection to food. boxd.it/8KnYbR

At a very full showing of Tampopo at SIFF, and I’m very excited for this rewatch! The yolk scene is burned on my brain.

Fantastic Four as a 60s period piece?? I’m very intrigued. Seems to skim their origin story, and I’d love if this was a standalone story.

me when my review gets more than 1 like

The Seed of the Sacred Fig is a fascinating exploration of the slippery slope of repressive society. The parents’ generation accepts and contributes to the pain as the younger generation discovers the dark truth. Among the year’s best films. boxd.it/8IpLax

A very happy birthday to the late, great Elaine Stritch on her centennial! One of the best brassy broads of all time.

Currently planning friends to see I’m Still Here and a 4K remaster of The Umbrellas of Cherbourg next weekend. I love sharing cinema. Great way to spend the coldest part of the year. #FilmSky

Another #Letterboxd Friday #LastFourWatched •Martin Scorsese’s first Fran Lebowitz doc Public Speaking •slow but intriguing newsroom drama in September 5 •Catching Fire is not my favorite Hunger Games •James McAvoy is hotter than than the movie is good in Speak No Evil #FilmSky

Learning the AMC Seattle 10 lost its lease is another sad slap this January. My partner and I have been going on dates there the entirety of our relationship, back to when it was a Sundance Theater. A 21+ theater made for a better audience, and I can’t imagine a comparable replacement emerging. 😢

While rewatching The Hunger Games for the first time since they were new, I’m reminded how much I wanted Katniss to forget both of those silly boys and get down with Joanna.

Steven Soderbergh’s Presence has a buoyant camera as it explores a haunting from the ghost’s perspective. Chris Sullivan is great as the dad. It’s not scary, but it is unsettling. Took turns I wasn’t expecting, and the ending scene is the first great shot of 2025. boxd.it/8CXfSV #FilmSky

For a retired filmmaker, Steven Soderbergh sure is busy. While waiting for Prescence to begin, Black Bag played in the trailers. He’s gotta direct Cher!

For #Letterboxd Friday, here are my #LastFourWatched •Shaun the Sheep 2 not as good as the first •Oscar nominated Elton John doc •Early aughts emo nostalgia in Underworld •Afrofuturism at its most neon in Neptune Frost #FilmSky

The #OscarNoms starting the morning with Yura Borisov was a great first nominee. Hearing Flow nominated twice in succession made me so happy. Major love for horror with The Substance and Nosferatu. Black Box Diaries is finally getting some attention (on Paramount+/Showtime now)

We watched Black Box Diaries, Sugarcane and Porcelain War at @siffnews.bsky.social 2024 festival, and they are all very deserving!!

The Substance and Challengers have words for you; but sadly they were left on the cutting room floor

Is Karla Sofia Gascón the first trans actor nominated? Sad to see no Marianne Jean-Baptiste, but this is a wild category this year.

Two musicals with score nominations, and no Challengers. Sigh.

The #OscarNoms sure are loving Conclave. Isabella Rossellini finally getting a nomination for being sassy and copying documents makes for a Ruby Dee-style career cap.

Oscar nominations morning has been my version of Christmas morning for two decades. Let’s see what surprises we get. #OscarNoms #FilmSky

The Teaches of Peaches was a shocking excitement in my teens, and the documentary is a great ode to the album and exploration of Peaches as an artist. One of our most important drag performers. The doc is now on @kanopyofficial.bsky.social #filmsky

my timeline

The Room Next Door is Almodovar at his most morose. Tilda Swinton is halting in her delivery of a woman who had already grieved her own demise. Julianne Moore is in a more naturalist drama. Alberto Iglesias’s score sells the melodrama. Almodovar’s direction in English needs growth. boxd.it/8tgmpf

It’s Pedro Almodovar time!

The Brutalist is the Brady Corbet movie I’ve been waiting for: a sweeping epic about power, control, and the madness in building a legacy. Grandiose scale, immaculate construction, dynamic score. Adrien Brody is an emotional casualty trying to rebuild his life. Didn’t feel its 3.5 hrs boxd.it/8rdhQr

Halfway through The Brutalist. Absolutely spectacular so far. Thank goodness for an intermission.

The Last Showgirl doesn’t live up to its premise. Pamela Anderson has great moments, but the clunky dialogue and flow to the story takes me out of it. Her audition breakdown is quite great. Jamie Lee Curtis is far from her best as her troubled friend. The camerawork was a sin. boxd.it/8q8Wh9

Josh Connor would be a good James Bond and all. I have a perfect balance for his M: Marianne Jean-Baptiste. Such a presence, a warm voice with authority, and she deserves a big role. Personally, I just want more people to know her acting prowess.

Time again for #Letterboxd #LastFourWatched: •Drew Barrymore’s sole directed feature •A French epic of vengeance, corsets and pulp •A chaotic, fun German sprint •Wallace & Gromit get spooky in their joke-packed first feature

The Count of Monte Cristo is a gorgeously crafted period drama with ample melodrama, a splash of pulp and delicious vengeance. The film drags in its third act, but it didn’t feel its full three hours. boxd.it/8p23iv

Timothee Chalamet embodies Bob Dylan with impersonating him in A Complete Unknown. Edward Norton grounds the biopic, weary and warm in his delicery. Monica Barbaro as Joan Baez calls Dylan on his bullshit while suffering from his appeal. Exceptional sound & great design. Still a biopic boxd.it/oBYa

Demi and Sebastian winning back to back for these roles is beautiful
