"Our oceans, food, soil and air are teeming with tiny bits of Tupperware. Scientists still don’t know what this plastic is doing to us." Great read by my colleague @megha.bsky.social on why regulators should act even while science is still evolving. www.scientificamerican.com/article/why-... 🧪

The federal government is defining sex by the size of reproductive cells people make. “The biology of sex and gender makes it very clear,” says @nathanlents.bsky.social author of The Sexual Evolution. “These are not hard categories with clear definitions.” www.sciencenews.org/article/biol...

This story by @arminda.bsky.social was my quiet source of joy this week. Ridiculous cooking method? ✔️ A whole heap of eggs cooked in the name of science? ✔️ Plot twist at the end? ✔️ 🧪

“These cuts should be a rallying cry for higher education to come together to make the case for the American system of research and teaching…This is a moment to unite.” This system is by no means perfect by universities play a critical role in upholding democracy.

The Trump Administration's list of censored scientific terms that get NSF grant proposals flagged contains "women” and “female”, but no mention of “men” or “male.” There is “black” and “indigenous” on this list, but no “white.” The only identity not censored is mine. youtu.be/dHXbpj1Z3UU

Wow. So not only were several bird flu studies left out of today’s CDC Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, some data on bird flu briefly appeared in the online report and then was quickly removed.

Quick update: @charles_gaba has completed uploading the archives of the full FDA site! Enjoy the easy of navigation. Next up, we're converting the CDC archive to this more convenient drop-down menu format. And after that, more archiving from more agencies. acasignups.net/fda-website

Oy. Not great news for containing the outbreak in cows...

Elon Musk and Donald Trump's attempts to shut down USAID could have a significant impact on some U.S. farms. Why? Good question! Let's talk about it. 🧵

Breaking news: A Senate panel voted to narrowly advance the nomination of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., President Donald Trump’s pick to oversee the nation’s health agencies.

Senators will vote today on whether to confirm RFK, Jr., as secretary of HHS, overseeing vast swaths of the country's health care. Here are 5 ways his nomination poses a threat to public health (by me, with help from @laurenjyoung.bsky.social): www.scientificamerican.com/article/reca...

The below is in relation to this story. Beyond moral dimensions, such a directive has major health implications. Different drugs and devices can work different in different populations and you don't know that unless you have a diverse pool for trials.

"NIH is mandated by the Public Health Service Act sec. 492B, 42 U.S.C. sec. 289a-2 to ensure the inclusion of women and members of racial and ethnic minority groups in all NIH-funded clinical research in a manner that is appropriate to the scientific question under study." tinyurl.com/3aexms9s

I think some people hear “grants” and think that without them, scientists and government workers just have less stuff to play with at work. But grants fund salaries for students, academics, researchers, and people who work in all areas of public service. “Pausing” grants means people don’t eat.

Trump attempts to freeze $3 trillion in federal grants. If this goes through, the nuclear blast radius will be huge—Suicide hot line, domestic violence shelters, cancer survivors. Time to see how strong our checks and balances are. Congress, universities and governors, it’s beyond time to engage

All of this is so deeply frustrating and infuriating because all of the administration's plans were laid out extremely clearly ahead of time, as we wrote about it. (1/2)

New: Trump officials have paused all external communications at health agencies like CDC, FDA, NIH. No health alerts and the famed MMWRs; no updates to key websites or social media posts. And no indication how long the pause will last. With @rachelroubein.bsky.social + Lena Sun.
