Governments are *supposed* to protect their people and tell the truth.

Our UoS English experts, working with @uniofnottingham.bsky.social archaeologists, have been investigating the cruel 'sport' of bear baiting in Renaissance England - a practice banned in 1835. Find out more 👉 brnw.ch/21wQRO9

Putting a face to what you read in the news. Until last Friday, I served our nation working as a Research Ecologist with the US Geological Survey (USGS). As a federal scientist, I provided robust, defensible information to support good decisions in natural resource management.

‼️The US-based @ipcc.bsky.social technical support unit (TSU) for Working Group 3 Co-Chairs has been terminated, and the US won’t be attending next week’s IPCC meeting where the AR7 chapter outlines will be approved. More by @afreedma.bsky.social here:

Is a new record low maximum for sea-ice extent going to happen in the Arctic this year? The Climate 8-Ball says "F&%kery ahead!" Yesterday's extent: 13,270,000 km² Previous record daily low: 13,440,000 km² (2018) Previous record low maximum: 13,878,000 km² (2017) Mean date for maximum: March 11

Sad to hear this. Having worked at the WGIII TSU in AR6, I know how vital our colleagues are to the process. This will disrupt AR7, hoping for a resolution that supports the team and the science (and I hear there are movements to do so swiftly)..

Evaluating animal consciousness Really exciting to live in times of a shifting paradigm regarding #animal #consciousness. A lot about how we use/treat animals in our societies will have to change in response... www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

That’s how you write a headline, people.

Scrap austerity – tax the super-rich instead. Britain can’t rebuild with more cuts – a wealth tax on the richest is the fair alternative to funding public services and growth.

After record heat stress and mass bleaching for more than two years globally, Australia's largest fringing reef - Ningaloo Reef - is now also in the midst of a severe bleaching event 💔

Fossil fuels make us poor and cold. In winter 22/23 alone the UK Gov wasted £40 billion helping pay energy bills, which soared because gas prices spiked. This wasn’t investment for the future. It was pouring money into Big Oil coffers. www.gov.uk/government/n...

Delighted to share this piece of work by our team from @unisouthampton.bsky.social led by Dr James Parkin! Brake pad dust can be more toxic than exhaust emissions, study says www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Our researchers @jamesparkinsci.bsky.social @mattloxham.bsky.social UoS Medicine have shown tiny particles emitted by some commonly fitted brake pads can be more toxic than those in diesel exhaust. Read more 👉 brnw.ch/21wQHay

This Guardian article on brake pad dust misses some fairly important context EVs use friction brakes far less than internal combustion engine (ICE) cars, because of the magic of regenerative braking Meaning they produce less of this toxic dust A 🧵 www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Cu in brake dust is potentially more harmful than PM from the exhaust: theconversation.com/car-brake-du... 🧪

Watch bad actors draw entirely the wrong conclusion from this. The message is not "It's pointless switching to EV because they still produce brake dust." It's "Even if we switch to EV, there will still be SOME issues." Summary: (Brake dust + emissions) worse than (brake dust + zero emissions)

Great work by my colleagues @unisouthampton.bsky.social www.theguardian.com/environment/.... Brake dust can be more toxic than exhaust emissions!

🌊 🧪 If the process of nodule formation has reached steady state (as it must), then for each new nodule which nucleates, an old one must become buried in the sediment. The nodules so buried could either accumulate as plums in the sediment pudding, or be dissolved away.

With the threats being levied against NOAA, I felt it was time to download all the sediment core and paleoceanography data being stored on NOAA's NCEI, just in case. I have uploaded the script to Github, just in case anyone wants to do the same! 🧪 ⚒️ 🦣 🌊 github.com/evangowan/EJ...
