The FAA is facing its first major aviation disaster in 16 years without a leader because Elon Musk helped push him out. The former FAA administrator stepped down on Jan. 20th after Musk called on him to resign. Musk was angry after the FAA fined SpaceX for failing to get approval for launch changes.

Today, a brush fire started in Pacific Palisades fueled by extremely high winds. At the Getty Villa, some trees & vegetation on site have burned, but no structures are on fire, and staff and the collection remain safe. The Villa is closed to non-emergency staff and the public.

Sad news: I don't know exactly when, but Thelma Johnson has died. She was an unflinching critic of all things Trump & Musk, a fierce defender of democracy. She & I bonded over the fact that I had a great-grandmother named Thelma, to whom I was very close as a kid. She will be greatly missed.

Over past decade, I have been one of many people calling out NYT (WaPo, WSJ, etc) for tweets, online heds, other "social sells" that sane-wash/both-sides political reality A lot of the time, maybe most, the publication has cleaned them up in an hour or two. NPR is riding this one all the way down.
