Agreed! This whole thing going on in The US of banning books is very corrupted. Without a proper education, you get ignorant individuals, and from there, you get people making horrible decisions, like people who are voting against their own interests.
Just want to add this....in 1977 aged 12 I was put into Foster Care for the next 6 years...my Foster parents were told 1 thing about me...
Not if but WHEN I kick off....give me a C S Lewis Narnia book and leave me alone. Books are escape from hell for some children.
Better than therapy.
So I hear they want to ban Anne Frank's Diary...If you can't get it try for I AM DAVID by Anne Holm....and The Silver Sword by Ian Serraillier.
Both books were part of the curriculum in 1970s UK schools and cover WW2/Holocaust from a child's perspective. I'm 59 now and they stayed with me.
My parents were in the UK during WWII and I heard all the stories of spending nights in the bomb shelters, lack of meat. The war effort brought on rationing. Basically what we will be doing during the next 4 years.
I know we are a lot better off here in many ways.. Free Healthcare Free Dentist and glasses etc...but UK going down its own dark holes at moment...pensioners s rowed by government...disabled screwed by previous government...but all us Resistors are a supportive family. So we will get through it.
I have some great cousins that are still In Scotland and more in England. We are all getting up there in years. We have worries here in states that the Brits don't have. We have an Orange Mango that is trying to put down roots.
But we had Boris the Buttplug....and yeah I'm well aware of the mango moron...I hate the guy. tfg for you is like Jimmy Saville was in UK.
(I promise if you Google him you'll go WoW Bingo). I am hoping you all get through the next 4 years. I have some very good friends in US and am hoping for them.
Made sure my granddaughter got all my banned books. Sheβs now in third grade but ready for adulthood. Iβm an English teacher by trade so I had a great collection.
Challenges range from βAnd Tango Makes Threeβ in childrenβs books to βThe Diary of Anne Frankβ and βTo Kill a Mockingbirdβ for high schoolers. Any book that challenges a kidβs thinking is prime for targeting - and should be bought and held for the future.
To Kill A Mockingbird changed my life. What I learned was a white woman lied and a black man died because of it. I learned that day that my own mom was Mayella Ewell. Everything she told me about black people was racist af.
Such a powerful idea! Encouraging critical thinking and open-mindedness through literature is more important than ever. A banned book club would not only promote diverse perspectives but also empower kids to question, reflect, and grow. π‘π
Every voice should be heard.
Even bad ones, so you can learn to think for yourself and question why you'd disagree, and learn why the other guy thinks like that.
My favorite purchase in my banned books is βWhere the Sidewalk Endsβ, by Shel Silverstein. Bought one for each of my grown kids.
This was our bedtime reading when they were little.
Any time my friends bring up Harry Potter. I am quick to direct them to the classics (which have been banned from most) like The Portrait of Dorian Gray, and Alice In Wonderland, The Chronicles of Narnia.
The Pride of Chanur. CJ Cherryh is my favorite. Many strong female characters. Her creation of alien species and human-alien interactions is delightful. The Chanur series is a very accessible for a youngster. Once your son starts liking her writing there's a treasure trove of wonderful stories.
Not sure why this just came through but @rainbowrowell.bsky.social Simon Snow (first book is Carry On) not only fills the Potter void, but is a much more diverse and sophisticated magical concept while still being a lost weekend or two of a read.
My children, now adults were read to every night. I believe it broadened their desire to create, inspire, engage, conceptualize, and learn about the world.
Two of my 3 kids are voracious readers and have read many banned books. The other is only an occasional reader, but an enthusiastic artist and gamer instead. And of course they are all wonderful.
If they're old enough then probably best to start with Sex Ed books.
With it not being taught in School & Books being Banned, it might be their only chance to learn about it now.
Especially as there's no back-up plan anymore.
I was considering buying a bunch of banned books and leaving them in neighborhood little libraries but thought about how I would react to Slaughterhouse 5 when I was 9. Does anyone have suggestions for banned books for all ages? Animal Farm, of course.
Sadly, I fear itβs due to ugly misogyny and racism that still exists in this country!
Add in millions of poorly educated and thus susceptible to lies/propaganda, hate filled Americans and the recipe for electing a fascist liar is complete.
Meet - "The Doonies"! This is a 10-book children's series, all written and created 100% in Canada - by this Canadian π π¨π¦ I am currently writing Book Five. Have a magical Doonie day! β¨οΈ
Reposting because last comment had grammar errors. Today I took my daughter to the book store, she wanted to buy a new book and I purchased a few books from my list of banned books.
MAGA literally doesnβt know the difference; their base all ask for Drag-Queen surgery it seems π€·ββοΈ And now I have offended my beautiful Queens. But yβall know what I mean βΊοΈ
I 100% endorse this! Although, unfortunately the task is becoming rather easy with so many titles being banned. I mean, Charlotteβs Web, Captain Underpantsβ¦ then Gender Queer? Who is in charge of this? π
Great idea. My friend, the late Dr.Samuel L. Blumenfeld, had his books on education banned from the Thomas Craine Public Library in Quincy, MA even though he was a Quincy school teacher and the library was establishing a series on local authors.
πππ Couldnβt agree more! When I was in HS we were told not to read, to skip, the Handmaidβs Tale in the Canterbury Tales. I read it the same night I was told not to read it.
Read to your children! As a high school English teacher, I am begging you to get them started early with the alphabet, Hooked on Phonics, visiting your local library for story time, etc.
We read to our daughter from birth. She was hard to get to sleep so we read aloud whatever we were reading. She is a voracious reader now. Sadly her daughter is not a fan of being read to; she would get very angry when her mom tried to read to - even as a baby.
Books open our hearts and minds and nothing should be banned. It's your choice to read then or not . It's all subjective no one has the right to ban books .
That's good, I have no ideological problem with that, but would it be awkward when you're buying him things like Nabokov's Lolita or Hitler's Mein Kampf? They're banned too. (<- I don't want them banned, I think with a Media Literacy you can read it to learn without encouragement. Still, awkward?)
Exactly. No books should ever be illegal, but it's silly to suggest that parents should buy their kids the anarchist's cookbook or hentai porn. No thank you.
Depending on age Velshi on MSNBC has a 2 year old banned book club, often i think books for teens... Think now as podcast.. Usually he has author on re it on Sat show 10-12 and on Sunday same time
Besides he's great!
I watch it all the time!! Itβs on the weekends. π€£ Well, I donβt know if I saw the focus on teens, but I want to watch now. I also embarrassingly posted this post to his book page once and I think it got zero attention π€£
I'm Australian, so that would just be The Anarchist Cookbook club, as far as I know.
Since our government is banning under 16s from social media in order to force everyone to provide our private info to tech billionaires, the kids will likely start this club anyway.
Maybe the adults, as well.
My grandson just turned one. For Christmas, I am starting a banned book library for him. And Tango Makes Three was the first purchase, and there will be many others. ππ₯°
For those who have the Republicans bible already being pushed in your childβs class. Whatβs good for the goose is good for the gander.
Request a ban for it.
Good morning. What a great idea. My granddaughter loves to read, I'm going to talk with her about this and see what she says. I bet she gets that grin on her face, the same one she makes when she knows she's going to make her Mama's head explode lol
Absolutely! Reading banned books teaches critical thinking, empathy, and the value of intellectual freedom. Starting a banned book club with your kids is a bold step toward raising curious, open-minded individuals who challenge censorship and celebrate diverse perspectives.
I was happy to see my kids holding a book and reading. When I was around 10-11 I was reading Fleming, Bronteβ & did a book report on the Bible as a book not a religion. I told my grandkids let me know what books you want to read that are banned and I will get them.
Exactly!
Funny, they seem to think because books are banned at school that kids wonβt read them. Heck, because of the ban they are assuring kids will read them! π€£π€£
I love this idea! After all, if itβs banned then Iβve just got to know, what is it that the government doesnβt want me to know? And more importantly, WHY?
There aren't many banned books in the UK so would have to delve into historically banned books, although tbh not sure I want to introduce children to Lady Chatterley's Lover, (unbanned in the 60's)
Iβve started buying banned books and putting them in our βsenior citizensβ Little Library, inscribed on the inner leaf as βThis is a book banned somewhere in the USA. Read! Enjoy! Return when youβre done!β
For example. They are easily triggered as we all know. This story is about a hairless cat lost in egypt and has representations of various gods. To make them angry one of the cats says that beliefs in gods and stories is up to the individual.

Pen America is another important resource to fight book banning.
Every voice should be heard.

How ridiculous! How could anyone find fault with these?!
And if you want a strong series contender.
The Secrets of The Immortal Nicholas Flamel
They'll read even more if it goes underground.
the 1st Rule of Banned Book Club is YOU DON'T talk about Banned Book Club.
The 2nd Rule of Banned Book Club is.......
#BannedBookClub

Damn narrow minded right wingers need to take Tim Walz's advice and mind their own damn business!

Which books have/will be banned in the US and why??
It's just one of my "things" I try to help with
I wrote this for them...
All the teachers who don't have the supplies they need....
"Give to the Teacher
Her just due
And she will make
Your child better than you"
*My teachers are all female
Knowledge is power.

As an aside, yay! I found you over here!
(That'll surely be all you'll need to do β they'll rebel nicely and surreptitiously, all by themselves!)
I thought it was great idea.
I bought them on @thriftbooks.bsky.social

I'm certainly going to have a lot of time in bed recovering next month. Maybe we should get more books.

Just let kids love reading without having to politicise it or virtue-signal with it.
