NEW — 19-year-old DOGE engineer Edward Coristine turns out to be the grandson of former KGB spy Valery Martynov, who played a role in a sprawling 1980s espionage saga. www.jacobsilverman.com/p/prominent-...

Trump pardoned the sentence of arguably the single biggest drug trafficker in American history on his second day in office!

Here's video of Steve Bannon doing a Sieg Heil today at CPAC. It is what it is and it's what Bannon intended. Don't let yourself be gaslit.

How many federal workers would DOGE need to fire to make up for Musk not paying his fair share of taxes? Answer: 677,000. That's 44% of the entire non-DoD federal workforce. Again, this power grab is not about the budget. It’s about politics.

DOGE recommended firing staff at USDA who were working on the nation's response to bird flu and hundreds of employees working at the National Nuclear Security Administration overseeing our nuclear stockpile. Now the Trump admin is scrambling to hire them back. "Efficiency."

The Trump Administration has started firing "several hundred" FAA probationary employees who maintain critical air traffic control infrastructure, according to their union. The move comes not even three weeks since the deadly midair collision over Washington, D.C. - Pete Muntean CNN reporting

"But at least three of the deputy mayors who attended the Sunday meeting - First Deputy Mayor Maria Torres Springer, Deputy Mayor for Operations Meera Joshi, and Deputy Mayor for [H&HS] Anne Williams Isom had already told the mayor of their intention to step down" www.nbcnewyork.com/new-york-cit...

This kind of thing is par for a course when there's a law that NYPD doesn't actually want enforced. It can be combated with an energetic effort from a city council that cares about the issue, but we haven't had one of those for a while either.

It is so tempting to say that the thing that's hurting me is actually my own fault, because then that puts it under my control. If I make myself perfect I will be safe. Much scarier to say this is actually a choice someone else made that has nothing to do with me at all

Who has my copy of the Power Broker?? 😖

Some good news: Tesla’s European sales are collapsing Down 63%(!) last month in France. Plummeting in Germany, too.

It is an unfortunate fact—and one the US and the world is about to viscerally learn through the Trump administration—that competence is required to fix things, but not to break them.

My first order of business this morning is to pass >$1M in tariffs on to American restaurants. Yall should stock up on maple syrup before the shock hits the shelves.

Housing is already incredibly expensive in the United States. Increasing basic building costs on Americans by executive action will worsen the housing crisis nationally and consequently mean more people unhoused.

The thing is, if you're a Federal employee and you realize that you're probably going to get fired anyways, that means you can do a lot more things than you otherwise would for fear of getting fired.

I mean why would a raptor even benefit from the blending of its prey? I think they actually prefer to pick and choose the bits they like. This is just pure sadism.

A few years ago, I got to see an amazing exhibit at the Center for Jewish History on the last time America shut its door to immigration. Especially striking were cartoons from the period. I finally went back & dug some of them up because they seem to speak equally to our age. A short thread 🧵

remember stuff like this when they tell you that diversity means a lowering of standards

Hillary Clinton: Message discipline is key! Donald Trump: The opposite! Kamala Harris once Plouffe, Tony West took over: Message discipline is key! Donald Trump: Provocative (hateful) verbal diarrhea. Donald Trump wins. DEMOCRATS: We need message discipline! #eggprices WORLD: Yawns.

What a tragedy. Mayya Gil, we have failed you. May you rest in power. 💔 gothamist.com/news/woman-w...

a nazi speaking at a nazi rally. it’s really not deeper than that.

SHOT: Meta: "It's time to get back to our roots around free expression." CHASER: Unless you want to share information on reproductive health care.

Didn't realize until NYTimes real-estate profile today that city of Yonkers, 30 mins by train from Grand Central, has been removing parking lots for upwards of a decade now to reveal the Sawmill River flowing through downtown. 1/

Still completely surreal to me that Google chose to light its search engine on fire

It's great seeing all the stories about the immediate success of congestion pricing in NYC. Good thing we didn't have these positive stories about the power of government before the election and instead had the Democrats can't do anything, even things they've already legislated, narrative.

this is incredible stuff. most state DOTs would spend tens of billions on highway expansions to try and see numbers like this (that wouldn’t even pan out anyway thanks to induced demand lol)

"How young is too young?" the head of the New York City elections agency asked a female colleague about older men dating younger women, according to an investigative report that recommended he resign or be terminated. Michael Ryan is still in his job (which pays more than the mayor's!) anyway.

This morning I walked from 2nd Avenue to 11th Avenue along 60th street, looking for local news crews. Predictably there were a few that were sticking mics in car windows. I asked, “Hey, want to talk to a pedestrian as well?”

After 30 years of desperate, sweaty efforts to look and talk like Real Heartland Americans during which the only wildly personally popular Democrat was a law professor from Chicago named Barack Obama, maybe it's worth asking: maybe Dems are barking up the wrong tree? Maybe that's not how to win?

The details of the Blake Lively complaint are much worse than the stories yesterday suggested. Pages 13 to 20 are a virtual encyclopedia of predatory, abusive behavior on set. Unprofessional doesn't begin to cover it. This should end many careers. www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

When we talked about passive voice and the “exonerative tense” with @drtaragoddard.bsky.social on the most recent episode of The War on Cars, this is what we meant. This appears to have been a deliberate attack yet no driver is mentioned in the headline.

guy who charges $23 for Brussels sprouts thinks that a $9 toll impacting the tiny minority of people who choose to drive to lower Manhattan will drive away business this is embarrassing, @tcolicchio.bsky.social
