I vividly remember playing it at a friend's house as a kid and being amazed when I built the wrong fence type and my tigers jumped over and started chasing people. earliest memory of me being excited about games from a simulation perspective.

I mostly agree with this but also I've seen you mislabel a game I worked on as "solo dev"! The label has its place but it's so quickly misused.

get back from a camping trip and have to immediately reckon with the fact we're at war for no good reason and also maybe we broke our own laws to enter it. very cool!

and importantly, I'll be leisurely. I don't need to enter a sustained period of crunch just to be 1% more employable to the job openings that are likely filtering me out from my resume anyway.

from the outside this probably won't seem like much. still in games, still making stuff off the clock. but I notice I've adopted this fallacy that I'm "one perfect project away" from stable employment, which is just burning me out. primary goals from now on are improvement and creative fulfillment.

Hey quick spoiler for the video game Mindseye (2025) but when you beat the game you unlock “free roam mode” which contains quite literally nothing, and you are forced to play as this character by default and can not change anything about him.

there's also two ticking clocks of different scales; the need to eat food and the need to prep for winter, which make optimizing my time usage way more meaningful (I've yet to see how punishing winter actually is as I'm only in september, but I do *feel* pressured to prep).

the day/night cycle is just consequential enough to be worth strategizing around without being a pain in the ass. I find myself delineating tasks that I can do within my house at night while I go do more mobile tasks during the day. sleeping is mostly superfluous, which I think is a good thing here.

workshop releases are kind of unexciting. steam's social mediums are all either dead or horribly toxic at this point. I loved getting to read all the TTLG thread discussion on my thief FMs, but that just doesn't happen here.

its so funny to me that my shitass fullbright gmod maps had hundreds or thousands of downloads each. I'm certain they've never been properly played on a server.
