It was memorable for sure. Not the typical fun listicle so it really stood out

The moment I read it I figured that's where we were headed as a county. What a country looks like when it has everything good it used to own sold out from under it, including its soul. The internet is so polluted and impossible these days and I fear it's lost in the ether now.

Ghetto bbq in the woods where they leave their trash everywhere was like a beloved tradition. Homes that look like they haven't been repaired since WW2 are common. Fervent national exceptionalism despite rampant corruption in the cities and horrible poverty everywhere else.

It had things like every outdoor grassy space in the cities is covered in dogshit because nobody cares to pick it up anymore. "Are you the one who has stepped in the most dogshit?" was a phrase said to anyone who complained about it.

We need to get past the 'this is happening' stage and into the 'what we're doing stage'. We're losing daylight here.

In rugby and in combat and in many other contexts, the rule stands: when contact is inevitable, the only acceptable action is to *accelerate*.
Acceleration mitigates damage and provides best chance of success.
Pulling back or hesitating ensures you will get run over.
It’s a brutal, simple rule.

And the "that'll never happen" people will always be loud and in your face and indignant because they hate that there might be people who think the situation will get worse than they think it will. They don't want to confront their own lack of imagination and foresight.

The "that'll never happen" people are always gonna be here in one form or another. They'll just be different people over time as individuals realize what's happening at different speeds. Some people evacuate as the hurricane makes landfall. Others were gone days earlier.

Maybe he should tell them that if that does happen then the Illinois government, including its national guard, will do everything possible to protect its citizens and their constitutional rights.

I used to work with a guy who would start off answers to questions like "well the first option is to do nothing..." and when he did I would always groan loud enough that he could hear me. Stop trying to fill the air with your stupid fucking pet phrases and just answer the question.

My old boss at the mortgage company told us a story of how an IRS agent pulled a gun on him when he wouldn’t turn his Rolex in to pay back taxes. Neither condoning nor condemning, but my how times have changed.

People are more afraid of losing their jobs than doing the right thing.
This is what happens when the wealth gap gets out of control.
